What happens if the USA heavily sanctioned Mexico?

After the 60 minutes where the Mexican president made outrageous demands in order to control the border I think Mexico is a complete net negative as an "ally".

What happens if we pull out of NAFTA and or heavily sanction them until they take responsibility and actions for all the illegal migration. It's become so bad I genuinely believe the mobilization of military forces may be necessary. It's far more important to us than any political BS in the middle east, or in Ukraine. Mexico is clearly not taking the US seriously, attempting to export us, and has displayed time and time again that they're weak and corrupt as cartel crime continually runs rampant spilling over into the US consistently. What good comes from them?

Woah, pulling out of NAFTA and sanctioning Mexico would be a pretty big deal. I get why you're frustrated about illegal immigration and the drug cartels, that stuff definitely needs to be addressed. But sanctioning our neighbor country could have a lot of unintended consequences too:

- It would likely hurt American businesses that trade with Mexican companies. A lot of supply chains and industries like farming rely on each other. Sanctions could mean job losses here.

- Mexico might retaliate with their own sanctions on US goods, which would further damage businesses and industries on both sides of the border. Trade wars usually end up hurting both countries.

- It could damage our diplomatic relationships and alliances in Central/South America long-term. Other countries might see us as unreliable partners.

- Strong sanctions might destabilize Mexico's economy and government even more. That could end up making the cartel problems and illegal immigration even worse as more Mexicans feel they have to leave to survive.

- Militarizing the border is controversial and has mixed results. It might escalate tensions unnecessarily between regular people just trying to get by on both sides too.

I'm not sure there are any easy or quick fixes here. Both countries need to work together to tackle these underlying issues like poverty, crime and corruption. Severing economic ties seems more likely to backfire than help. There might be other avenues to pressure and incentivize Mexico to cooperate more on the problems before it comes to sanctions. But it's a complex situation for sure, with no perfectly clear answers.

They do not cooperate nor do they take us seriously. They are a corrupt government that allows illegals from anywhere to travel through the country, they allow the Chinese to create fake pharmaceutical companies to ship fentanyl and traffick it into the US, and they are slaves to the violent cartels they have not been able to defeat for many years now. If this was the 1960-1990s we likely would have removed the government already.

It is drastic but they are terrible neighbors. Also this wouldn't necessarily make the migrant crisis worse because ~80% if not more of these illegals are not Mexicans.

Our other relationships with most central and South American countries are not good unless it's some country we staged coups in awhile ago.

It would no doubt hurt the US economy in the short run but it would also force American businesses that have been offshoring to be more US reliant and self sustaining. Was all of NATO completely sanctioning Russia for it's attack of a completely neutral sovereign nation of which we have no diplomatic treaties or agreements with justified? But sanctioning a corrupt nation that is actually causing harm daily in the USA is too far? Obrador is sleezy POS. If South and Central America want to side with him let them, we have gone to war for a random Asian country being communist before meanwhile half of these countries want that (like the sanctioned Venezuela and embargoed Cuba). El Salvador and Argentina surely won't be turned off by it.

We have a huge military with troops all over the world when the biggest threat in the USA is being allowed because the government is too weak and afraid to hurt feelings. We are the big dog, the economy, the premier military. We need to act like it

Yo man, I still think threatening war or sanctions is taking it way too far. Like yeah the Mexican government definitely has problems with corruption and the cartels have too much power. And illegally crossing the border is an issue too. But invading or attacking them wouldn't solve anything - it would just make the problems way worse.

Think about it, if we sanctioned them or removed their government, the cartels would be running wild down there. They'd control even more territory without the Mexican army and police to oppose them at all. Then they'd be even stronger and closer to the border. Doesn't that seem scarier than now?

And what makes you think Central and South American countries would support an invasion? Most of them wouldn't want a bigger war starting right next to them. It could really destabilize the whole region. Plus we need partners there, not more enemies.

I get being frustrated with issues like drugs and illegal immigration, but war should really really be an absolute last resort. Maybe we could keep pressing them to reform and work with us more, while also boosting aid for things like border security technology. Compromise and cooperation is usually smarter than aggression, in my opinion. There's got to be diplomatic solutions we can try before straight up attacking another country, you know?

The agricultural work that illegals do is literally a drop in the bucket. The reason these illegals are coming here is because democratic sanctuary cities are heavily incentivizing it. They undermine the border and they're guaranteed free housing, food, and given USD.
