Like I've yet to hear a female military officer not refered to a sir
I personally keep them separate Ma'am or Madam/Madame for Women and Sir for Men

In the Air Force males= Sir, females= Ma’am. No matter the rank.
Never would you call a female “sir”. While I was getting out they were trying to get rid of “sir” and “ma’am” all together and we’d just have to address whoever by their rank and name only.
I went to school with army &navy and army would sometimes pick and yell at us for calling them “sir” instead of their name and rank, but that’s what we were taught.
Weird why I always seeing it
I'm not calling anyone Sir or Ma'am unless they reciprocate that respect and call me a Sir in return too
I do not want to feel like their slave
if they are being addressed by a student or someone significantly younger
