Monday, May 27, 2024 Memorial Day is observed on the last Monday of May. It was formerly known as Decoration Day and commemorates all men and women who have died in military service for the United States. Many people visit cemeteries and memorials on Memorial Day and it is traditionally seen as the start of the summer season. I like to remind people that it’s about much more than cookouts and pool parties. Even if you loathe war, as i do, you can still honor and respect the men and women of our volunteer military forces. I don’t have to fight because they do. I don’t even have to like the underlying reasons for our conflicts. They’re taking care of it for us. The good, the bad, and the ugly of it all.
Used to live in a rural mountain community and volunteered with the American Legion and helped with all the setup for the ceremony at the cemetery and back when my grandfather (air force vet) was around, we'd have pulled pork or Tri-Tip afterwards. Unfortunately he died and is buried at that same cemetery but since my parents and grandma sort of had a falling out, we may not be going back to that cemetery.
