Why is my typing improving over time?

Two years ago, my typing wssort of pathetic at about 20 words per minute but somehow in the last 6 months it has improved (with no special effort on my part) to about 60-70 words per minute. I have no idea why this happened or if it will last. Ahy thoughts?

Somewhere along the way your subconscious decided it was tired of typos and wanted to focus more determinedly. You just noticed is all.
I personally fear what my subconscious is doing.

As you practice typing for a long time, your fingers will become more and more skilled in memory and your typing speed will also be improved.

Because you’re on here a lot.. I remember I took a typing class in school and once I learned where my fingers were suppose to go, all it took was practice and I remember having a piece of paper taped over the keyboard so we wouldn’t look at it and that helped a lot too

muscle memory does love a fine tuned, fine motor skills...

with the right and better keyboard, this is going to happen

personally, I do better with wider keyboards (with a bit more clear between the keys)

I found that my typing improved a lot once I started using more ergonomic keyboards.

Okay, the one thing that I did change was that I got a mechanical keyboard. Mechanical keyboard is a little bit louder than the other kind, but the keys have a much more tactile feel and I think it's easier for to feel them on my fingertips. This is the one change I did make that I just remembered. You can buy a mechanical keyboard relatively cheaply like maybe 50 bucks and it might be worth it for you.

My boss got me a mechanical keyboard when I first got hired. He uses one and really likes it. I used it for a while but I found a hybrid keyboard that had just the right amount of resistance. I still cannot type. I am older and missed out on learning keyboarding when I was in grade school like my kids did.
I have a friend that plays the piano. He is really good. One day I mentioned that I might like to learn piano and he told me not to bother.. I was around 40 at the time. He said that if you do not learn before you are 30 you might as well forget it. Your brain is not plastic enough to learn a new skill

My brain seems to have learned a new skill and I am over 30, so...

Try typing with just the index fingers and tell me if that helps.

You will improve at anything you do regularly. Except chess. You won't ever get better at that once you reach "a certain age".
