Ironically, the E. U. is so far behind the U. S. on rights of the accused, it took something like this to "grant" the right to appeal. Maybe next up they'll get rid of trials in absentia and grant the right to confront your accuser.

Most African countries are kleptocracies run by folk Trump's and Biden's age, meaning they cut their political eyeteeth on the anti-colonialism movement, and can't and/or won't relate to the issues their MUCH-younger compatriots face.(The average African is about nineteen like my great-niece in New Jersey while the typical African leader is about eighty.)
