There is, running through London, a river called the Thames. Except it's not called the "Thames", it's called the "Tems". That's not what the British called it, or what the Romans called it, or even what the early English called it. It's called that because a high-status dolt had a speech impediment, and because this particular dolt happened to be the king, everyone started following them in pronouncing the name of the river wrong.

This is an important lesson in the stupidity of following the standards of high-status idiots just because they're high-status. The other part of that label is far more important. And while you'd probably like to think that idea was left behind, in the age of social media, it's more prominent than ever.
