What would you do in this "lie to protect" dilemma?

A friend has committed a minor crime and asks you to lie to provide an alibi. The truth will ruin their life, but the lie could potentially implicate you if discovered. Do you lie to protect your friend?

I might lie about some things. I would NOT provide a false alibi though. That's just asking for trouble, with a very good chance of getting caught. Very likely it wouldn't even work.

I've been charged with falsification before. It was for something pretty tame, not nearly as serious as lying as an alibi. It was a long time ago and I don't remember for sure, but I think it was a first degree misdemeanor, which is just shy of being a felony. I image lying about an alibi would be a lot more serious.

If it's minor then I would suggest he face it head-on. He got himself into the mess so he should be man enough to face it alone and not drag anyone into it that could be tainted by his crime (s).

I would not lie to protect, I would fuck him over because I do not side with criminals even if it is friends, family, etc. I ain’t going to jail for their crap.

That's not a minor crime.
In my youth, 17-21 I would lie. Friends were friends at that age. Then responsibility comes along and you have to be careful.
