Which country has the most fascinating history?

Off the top of my head, I'll say the Netherlands. Venice was built when Attila invaded Roman territory and the people who survived wanted somewhere they'd be safe from him, so the found small islands in a giant marsh, brought trees from a long ways away, and went to work building.

When, by contrast, the Dutch faced the problem of "we want to build a nation here, but the ocean's in the way" decided "fuck it; we'll move the ocean", and, fueled by what I can only assume was a superhuman amount of beer (Gambrinous WAS Dutch, or at least Flemish), created a massive network of dams and dikes that let them build a country both below sea level AND next to the sea. Despite being less than half the size of Ireland (itself not a large country), the Dutch took on just about every major European power, and usually won.

Also, presumably at some point one of them overheard a claim that Danish was the silliest-sounding language in Europe, and decided they could beat it (again: beer), and created spoken Dutch, which did. The Dutch language, interestingly, is even more idiomatic than English, giving us expressions like "en frisse neus halen", "to get a fresh nose", meaning "go outside for some fresh air", which makes sense, and "boterham", "butterham" meaning "sandwich", which doesn't.

Depends on what you think is fascinating I guess. For example Egypt started back in the bronze age or something and is arguably, along with Greece, the only two countries on earth that can claim they survived an actual collapse of mankind, that being the bronze age collapse. Both Egypt and Greece also has very long and interesting stories but with different themes going forward.

China is similarly ancient but again has a different theme. For example, it keeps falling apart and reforming constantly with all the military and political implications that entails.

Personally I like the Romans. Putting aside all the cool stuff they built, their entire history is a meme. With the fundamental instability of Rome as well as their flawed government systems it just becomes and endless live action movie of comedy, tragedy and drama. They are responsible for some of the most insane things in human history for both good and bad which makes for some interesting reading.

It’s likely the country you live in or have an interest in. Some countries have a really long history, others are relatively new and developing. For me it will be a European country, France, Italy, Greece, England all have fairly detailed history including the modern era.
