Hypothetically speaking, lets say candidate X says something bad or stupid. It becomes a big headline for days. Candidate Y says something just as bad or stupid. It receives little media attention. That is just one example of how the media can favor one candidate over the other. If that happens, is it still a democratic election?

It's un unfortunate reality that Trump has made so many insane claims over time and so many unhinged rants and lied so blatantly so many times that doing it is by definition no longer news. That's part of why his misinformation campaign can be effective. He's gone so far off the deep end that no one thinks anything of it anymore so it receives less attention.
Voting is a responsibility and someone shouldn’t be voting just based on media headlines. Taking time to do research and discover what the politicians stand for is crucial before Election Day. Remember people don’t just vote for top of the ticket but also vote for local resolutions and school board members and local judges. So just because mass media has a headline about what a presidential candidate says one day that shouldn’t cause millions to vote for or against them.
