It's stupid. We tend to cling to tradition. Why isn't the primary all done on the same day? Why does New Hampshire and Iowa get to go first? It probably made sense back in the horse and buggy days, but not now.

the entire country needs to vote on the same day. If no presidential candidate gets over 50% of the votes to be his party's nominee, he and the second place candidate go into a run off.
Independents can vote in either primary.
