Downtown was full of small independent business along with a few chain stores. There was a drug store pharmacist for almost every doctor. Independent full service station was in every neighborhood. There were lots of independent appliance stores. Moreover, most food was produced by millions of small farmers.

Now they are almost all gone. They have been replaced by huge conglomerates and franchises; all operating on the same model with poor service. That is the result of numerous laws and over-regulation making it almost impossible for small businesses to compete and comply.
