Ban on alcohol, drugs, guns, abortion, etc.

Taxes. Every time the government bans something they lose the tax revenue off of it. Prohibition led to organized crime not just absorbing alcohol but many other products because of massive distrust of the government. Revenue also has to go into finding and fighting the prohibited substance which is no longer funding the government as well.

Ammo is expensive, but every round fired at the range is currently taxed, even every stolen gun was taxed when it was bought, twice even, for the FFL purchase, and then the buyer. If they were banned, they'll still be produced on lathes, routers and 3d printers, but without any taxes, restrictions or background checks.

They would just be more expensive, along with the ammo.

Happiness? Joking but bans lead to reductions in certain situations. That's the supposed goal. If the punishment is extreme, the reduction can be massive, like with having the death penalty in some countries for drugs. Complete eradication is impossible, unless the thing is next to impossible to possess, like with nukes. I'm fairly certain no one in the US has one. I wouldn't be surprised if organized crime groups in other countries have one though. And I'm also assuming those people get caught and eliminated without a word going out to the public. To avoid panic.

Not ever.
Telling people not to do something intrigues them and makes them want to see why not. Tell someone not to do something and it will be all they can think about.

If it's something they need (abortion) or want badly (wine, beer, liquor, weed, drugs, sex), they'll figure out a way to get it.

If it's something they feel they have a right to (guns, free speech), they'll say fuck you to the government and go behind its back.

Banning things creates a market for organized crime and leads to government collusion.
It leads to greater authoritarianism and oppression.
It increases government budgets, revenue and corruption.

They don't ban things because they think they can make htem go away but because they can make them more rare.

For some things like Drugs, Alcohol, and abortion that is a good thing because that means fewer people will be directly injured or killed by them.

For things like Guns it simply gives the people who DO disregard the ban all the power over everyone who follows them.

Lol. No. Never. Gradual use of sin taxes, societal disapproval, education of youth will all be much more effective than a ban. It's just like banning books, you've just given a signal to the kids that that's what they want to read...
