I know it was banned during the 18th amendment during the 1920s til the 1930s, but that was a long time ago. Other countries have gotten it banned like Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Iran, Iraq, etc. And they seem to be doing fine. Iraq recently banned it too in 2016.
A ban is not a bad idea ( even though it will be breached , as it is in all the places you mention ) because it sends a message , and you may well think twice about the drug , as any reduction is a good thing.
I come from a country ( Australia ) that lived off the back of " a few quiet beers " , which basically means getting shitfaced , all these people that you think are your friends are not , they are just addiction partners , the brain then associates " a good time " with intoxication , I'm 100% a functional alcoholic ( although some would scoff , but its certainly true ) , now , the only thing I can do is self regulate which I do , BUT , it would have been nice to see a different attitude towards the drug when I was young , so it was never " a good time " , even worse when this attitude is associated with your job , sport , or sexual activity.
So , I'm all for a change of attitude in Australia , and even here in Thailand , any woman of merit , will basically never drink , or so rarely that it doesn't matter , sadly many Thai men will binge drink , its all cultural.
Freedom of choice is a great thing , but lets not forget cocaine was legal for a very long time , and different attitude is needed , certainly in Australia , so I assume its similar in USA.
If alcohol had to go through FDA testing like other drugs, it would never be approved. It would fail FDA testing in so many ways. It wouldn't be a prescription drug, and it sure as hell wouldn't be over the counter.
I'm against banning it though. That would be one hell of a mess, just like it was the last time it was tried in the US.
In an authoritarian country where people are more used to similar things, and where the authorities have an iron grip, it might not cause such an uproar.
Why? They tried that once before and it didn't stop people from drinking. They just used the black market and speakeasies to drink at instead of bars. And the government was not making all that money from liquor taxes, so they finally repealed it. They also have made a ban on drugs too. How has that worked out? There are still thousands of people dying from overdoses. If they banned alcohol it would just be something else the Cartels would smuggle in to make money from, though not as easy. But, as we know with the Cartels, where there is a will, they will find a way.
Those are all Islamic countries that ban alcohol use in their religions. Since we are pluralistic country when it comes to religion, and there are many groups of people who do not abuse alcohol, don't think it's going to happen again. PLUS, more importantly, it is a GIANT source of tax revenue.

Alcoholic beverages are extremely tasty. Think of all the various wines, cocktails, liquors and liqueurs. Enjoying the flavor of any of the wide varieties of alcoholic beverages is sophisticated. It's not about getting stupid drunk. And even if a person gets pleasantly tipsy once in a while, so what? As long as they don't endanger or harm anyone.
Alcoholism is a different matter. But that's the individual's responsibility, just like addiction to anything else like drugs, gambling, sex, and so on.
I don't drink alcohol, but I don't think we should impose Islamic practices on a non-Muslim country.
Used to be the case in Saudi Arabia that if someone wanted to frame you for a crime, they would often plant alcohol in your home and call the religious police.
And then there's the little matter of a ban on alcohol being a total failure in the US when it was tried a century ago.
The thing is, alcohol is dropping in sales from ‘Gen Z’ being the healthiest generation yet in terms of alcohol & smoking & vaping & etc.
So alcohol may fizzle out since it is no longer seen as an ‘adult thing to do’ also alcohol is seen as a social drink which less people hanging out at pubs having a “good time” means less drinking. Furthermore, alcohol in restaurants can get really pricey and not many youth trying to save money by spending less aren’t going to be partaking of drinks.
I just don’t see a ban going over well now since ‘Prohibition’ didn’t go too well and allowed organized crime to soar allowing corruption in the courts, police, and more. It isn’t the brightest idea especially since alcohol is going out the door in the coming decades.

If you take the drugs away from a sick person in pain they will have some terrible withdrawal symptoms and go into a frenzy. subsequently their quest to get their drugs creates worse problems.
