Is anyone confident they have ever changed someone’s else’s voting decisions / political beliefs on GaG/social media?

I’ve been on and off GAG for probably 14 years. I can remember a time where politics were seldom discussed. However this all started to change during Obama’s second term and of course the Trump/Hillary 2016 race. Now politics are always been brought up on GAG.

However I have to wonder if anybody has ever seriously changed anyone else’s mind on voting decisions and political outlooks on here. I highly doubt it.

Really is it worth all my time and energy to get in a long drawn out fist fight with someone who will never change their mind or vice versa? It’s ultimately a waste of time on both ends.

Anyway if we can’t change anybody’s mind then why waste our time posting about politics? Is it about ventilating? Is about getting riled up and arguing? Even the well thought out questions/posts usually end up heated arguments and trolling. It’s like everybody has an addition to “anger porn” on here.

So why waste our time?

I think you make a really good point. It also doesn't seem to be in line with what the original intent of the site was. I've been here just a few months and feel things have really changed in just that amount of time, and not for the better. I notice people who I used to enjoy seeing their opinions no longer posting. A lot fewer women seem to be on the site than before, also.

Nope. I’ll freely share opinions on gag and have discussions. But I don’t expect to change someone’s mind.

Sometimes it works out that way (which is ideal). But when you are used to people going form 0 to 100 OR having undereducated mindset it gets frustrating.

Yes that is frustrating yes. I also have found people are not often here to discuss politics in good faith. Either they want to “win” a debate or want to spread propaganda. It’s why I usually will answer their questions sarcastically

Yep there is a difference between arguing to figure out WHAT is right vs. arguing to BE right. Totally agree.

Probably not a bad approach tbh. But I have directly and personally detrimentally impacted by one sides ideology.
