No, I think in the past people were way smarter and there is a lot of lost knowledge. Its hard for me to imagine we are the smartest people ever if we can't figure out how the pyramids were built for example. There had to have been a societal reset at some point, like consider a world wide disaster where we loose the ability to use our technology nd our technology is burried. How many generations do you think would retain our level of knowledge? I'd say we are back to much older times pretty quick.

As for the age of consent argument, we have slowed down massively in our speed of maturity. I don't have any reason to assume a 16 year old back then wasn't a proper functioning adult in a society where the average life expectancy was much lower and that also had fewer social expectations. We waste so many years in school learning useless topics that our actual decision making and life experience is not the same at 16 as a society where you'd be participating in the real world from a young age and did actual mastership of a craft. I don't see why 16 year old's can't be experts in a field. I know I had the potential to be a full blown IT system administrator at age 11 had I been allowed to be. So we all have to put things into perspective, I'm not saying the age of consent in society should be lowered in fact for a lot of stuff i'd raise it to 3 years after whatever your education finishing year was, but in a different faster maturing society of smarter younger people I can see it being different.

No. Strictly speaking the evolutionary pressure back in history was bigger which made sure that humans were faster, stronger and smarter (at the cost of other things, its not all positive). It has little to do with age of consent though and the opinion of people living in 1885 has no relevance to us living today.

I think there's some nuisance to it.

People tend to put on rose glasses and call others dumb but if you never touched a computer and had 7 billion Google searches and YT videos in your head and you didn't have a phone it's not like you know how to build one yourself.

They were products of their time and environment just like we are.

Then evolution can come into argument and honestly pre historic history and things like studying the anthropology of evolution are things I'm not interested in so I can't really answer that, my answer was more so to recent history where I believe humans are generally just as intelligent as the past no more no less (having accessibility to information doesn't make you smarter).

The entire idea of adolescence is an entirely recent phenomenon. Previously, there was child and adult. Any custom, more, tradition or law is simply a reflection of the time period of the people that promulgated it. It served them and these things must necessarily evolve as they become either useful or not useful for future societies.
