When the ACA federal subsidies expire at the end of 2025, millions of Americans, especially in Republican controlled states, will face significantly higher health insurance premiums.

Enhanced federal subsidies have reduced premiums by an average of 44% for enrollees. Without Congressional renewal, premiums will double, leading to a sharp decline in ACA enrollment from 22.8 million in 2025 to 18.9 million in 2026. The Congressional Budget Office estimates that about 2.2 million people would lose their insurance in 2026. The expiration could particularly impact low-income individuals and those in "red" states that have not expanded Medicaid.

There is no way it gets funded. Even if some regulations from it were dropped in a new funding bill, and somehow it was redesigned to only help the beneficiaries instead of butt fuck everyone else paying into insurance.

No one on the right would be able to vote for that and not completely tank their political career, as "repeal obama care" has been a rallying cry on pretty much every election since it went into effect. I'm at a point now where I consider Medicaid the best insurance, but would not have said the same only 4-5 years ago. It's getting bad.

The "concepts of a plan" Trump has depends on an incomplete understanding of how health insurance works. Selling across state lines won't do jack shit because doctors don't have to provide covered care with out of state insurance. They have agreed upon prices with insurance companies. Those only apply to those insurers in that state. So if you have Illinois insurance in Missouri, you won't get many covered services because the doctors don't have agreements with those companies. Most Illinois residents who go to doctors in a different state have tgst other state's insurance already. That is true for every state.

I don't know, some of the best insurance I've had was from chemical plants who purchased the policies from other states. So my card would say x of y, and be accepted everywhere without an issue. What you're talking about could definitely be an issue for medicaid or marketplace insurance though.

The places I was working at that had those policies were global, so maybe they negotiated it to be nationwide across all their branches, I don't know all the backend stuff there.

@monorprise No, there is no reason that a pill should cost 50 bucks in America and 1 dollar in Canada. There is no reason an MRI needs to cost $2000, there is no reason a CEO of a health insurance company should make 5 million dollars a year. Nobody is worth that kind of money.

Stock holders seem to think they are, but then again modern companies have terrible judgement when it comes to compensation in the first place.

That said the cost of medical procedures has everything to do with an absence of price selection and in many places even available upfront pricing. So they charge whatever they want which is as much as they can justify to themselfs and still get business.

That is why you can get that same MRI for 350 dollars somewhere else. But you never bothered to check because in many states there is no way to check and with insurance there is little to no reason for most people.

You want to stop this kind of abuse in the health care industry you got to:
1: mandate full prices are advertised up-fount, or there is no obligation to pay.
2: Outlaw private insurance that isn't a % pay system. You can have a catastrophic clause but it needs to be rather high or income based.

In cases where the Doctor can't know or consult the patent ahead of time such as surgery the doctor needs to offer a reasonable estimate, and anything over needs to be justified.

@monorprise how can you outlaw private insurance? The majority of people have private health insurance. Any time the government takes something over it becomes a disaster. The system can be improved and waste can be mitigated.

If the stock holders had paid attention they would demand a larger dividend so they like the directors and CEO are not relevant. All of them have a vested interest to make the most money possible.

The issue is as mentioned their legal ability to demand payment without giving their customer foreknowledge of the price. And just as important the quality of insurance in preventing most customers from caring enough to actually shop for insurance.

@monorprise When I get medical care I get a statement afterwards. I am always dismayed at the cost of it. Several thousand dollars for a physical is a lot. When my kids were little we had really crappy health insurance that did not cover doctors visits. If my wife had to take one of the kids to the doc it we paid cash and it was usually 50 bucks. Now everyone has the insurance companies pay it so nobody cares about how much it costs. This is something that needs ot be looked at.
I know that doctors have big malpractice insurance that they pay and there are a lot of other expenses but $2500 for a physical is a little excessive.

The tragedy of the commons problem created by the private socialism of health insurance has been driving up the cost of care since the 1940's arguably. Its only going to keep getting more and more prohibitively expensive as fast as it can.

Until most of the population is either denied service by price or force (goverment) and forced to provide out of pocket again.

As mentioned the current scheme is a forcing a market failure on the faulty presumptions that individuals care about the collective effects of their actions in a diverse country in which they have no connection. Even in homogeneous countries this really doesn't work.
