Yes, countless times starting at age 13. As one mentioned, most of them are useless. They are places to be medicated, supervised, sleep, eat, and attend the disorganized and joke of a groups they have. There really is no one-on-one counseling, except you may be lucky to see your assigned psych doc for like 5 minutes a day. You may go some days initially or periodically without seeing the doc, depending on their workload. The usual stay is about a week. Here in Tennessee, they can involuntarily hold you for up to 96 hours, and that is NOT including weekends, holidays, and the pre-stay in the ER or holding unit. And expect a bed to not be immediately available.

I remember being stuck in the process for a total of 2 weeks one time. It was initially at the ER, then I was moved into the CDU (critical determination unit... a holding unit) for days until they finally transferred me to the psych center where I stayed another week.

Your best bet is to go to the crisis center or the "psych crisis center" where they may hold you for 3 days at most.

Yes. For PTSD depression social anxiety disorder and borderline personality disorder. They're not very useful. You go to groups all day or sleep. The Drs are not there to listen to what caused you to come in. They spend maybe less than 5 minutes with you a day. You get medication. You stay maybe 5-7 days then you leave on your own or they kick you out. That's pretty much it. If you're lucky they'll let you have your cell phone for a little bit a day. Some places won't even let you bring your own books. You're there to be stabilized not treated or have counseling. You probably won't have any one on one therapy. I never have. Groups can be pretty hit or miss and can be very emotionally charged and hostile. Other patients can be dangerous. I've never been in a fight in one. but I've seen others fight with staff and other patients. If you really don't like the psych ward try to find a crisis recovery center they're like a hospital but smaller and much more relaxed with fewer rules and less dangerous people. Plus you get one on one counseling. Plus the food is usually better.

That is exactly what happened at my stint in a mental facility. It was the wors6t 6 days of my life (and I spent time in jail haha)

Like I said it's for stabilization not treatment. If you want one on one counseling you'll have to go to a therapist. The hospital staff is trained to never become close to a patient in any way. They will walk away from you if you start to tell them what's going on in your life that you need to come there. I've been denied access to the psych ward because they thought I was lying to get a free vacation. I was there because my ptsd was driving me nuts and I didn't feel safe by myself. So that's when I found crisis recovery centers much more open, and friendlier. I now work at one.
