Trump imposed tariffs on steel and aluminum during his first term. The major problem was that the US steel mills could not ramp up production fast enough. Prices did not skyrocket and the price of beer cans did not triple. At the end of the Trump administration inflation was 1.4%

Beer cans are made of Aluminium. Nobody was buying anything but food and home exercise equipment at the hight of the pandemic with thousands of Americans dying every day.

I interviewed for a job the run the network at a place that made custom made components out of steel. They used to buy 100% of the raw stock from China. When Trump imposed the tariffs they were able to buy from local steel mills but they could not get the stock fast enough. All their local sources were just as swamped.
