This is just a post for all the people who write me about how you can't say anything in Europe or you'll get arrested. This is a more balanced overview of the situation, not focusing on individual incidents. The U. S. had a score of 85 which is still very good. But I needed to make this public service announcement for myself so I can link people this post in the future because I know someone will write me again about how there's no freedom in Europe.

Absolute nonsense. The Netherlands has no freedom of speech laws and people have been arrested and prosecuted for speech. We are not ahead of the US. They are even making moves towards banning organizations from performing specific activities at their decree. So if the rulers judge a specific organization publishing a dissident magazine is annoying they will then be able to decree that this organization may no longer publish magazines. Things are turning dark here in the EU. We also have draconian laws where they must combat 'Misinformation' on social media, again no free speech to be had.

I just take offense to attempts at downplaying our situation in Europe with fake statistics while admittedly just doing that to downplay people trying to raise awareness. Maybe you intended to do that as a counter for Americans who point out how much worse Europe is, but Europe is genuinely worse and everyone knows it.

I just realized your from Switzerland, that makes more sense now. Switzerland is one of the only few countries that is a real democracy. Naturally your near the top of that list so your own position may be accurate which is why you may not notice its actually bad for the rest of us. Its one of the VPN destinations I use after all.

Amazingly, Australia is only one point worse (84) although I'm reliably informed (on here) that they can arrest you and throw you in prison for waving to a friend!

I have a feeling whoever it was "informed" me of this is one of the people you're talking about.

Turkey has a rating of 9 atm which means it's in crisis. In the mid two thousands it reached a peak of about 50 but since then it has strongly declined.

Yes, the administration is very strict, we cannot even rebel, people are directly sent to prison or insane asylum, that's why we remain silent.
