An Italian navigator/explorer who was the first to identify the lands of the southern western hemisphere as new continent. His name was Amerigo Vespucci.

Columbus reached the "new world" first, but thought he had reached Asia.

The voyage of 1501–02 is of fundamental importance in the history of geographic discovery in that Vespucci himself, and scholars as well, became convinced that the newly discovered lands were not part of Asia but a “New World.”

In 1507 a humanist named Martin Waldseemüllera created large planisphere in which the name America appears for the first time, although applied only to South America. The suggestion caught on; the extension of the name to North America, however, came later.

allegedly... the word Tejas (Texas) comes from the native word "taysha" (Caddo language) and it means friend or friendly... which, these natives were supposed to be... friendly or welcoming with the Spanish settlers

also, allegedly... the word Mexico (México) comes from the native word "mexihco" (Nahuatl influenced dialect) which is supposed to refer to the area in which the Mexica people live (or Aztecs, as the world commonly refers to)

Polska comes from Pola [fields] -ska is just a derivation of proto slavic -sk what means belonging to something/someone. First time mentioned was Polska in Francic writings from VII century. Before it was germanic tribe land ruled by different tribes but slavs took over in VI century while time of slavic expansion and called it fields.

Part where I'm living didn't belong to Poland in the past. It's called Pomorze [upto the sea] or Pommern in German. latin Pommerania. It doesn't have any etymology. This name comes probably from old prussian language that died out in XI century due germanization and polonization.
