I thought that Carney just won the primary and there will be another election later.

Mr. Carney won the Liberal Party Leadership Convention to replace outgoing Prime Minister Justin Trudeau.

@beefcakebradybatson I actually took a political science course in college as an elective and I cannot remember how Canada is set up. I imagine that there will be a final election at some point.

Mr. Carney will face five other party leaders, with Conservative Pierre Poilievre the one who, along with Mr. Carney, should Mr. Carney win the general election, heads the only other party with a chance to become Prime Minister.(Should Mr. Poilievre win, he will be our 25th Prime Minister and Mr. Carney will have enjoyed our shortest-ever Prime Ministerial term).
