Putin and Trump agree on partial ceasefire in Ukraine for 30 days. Thoughts?

Russian President Vladimir Putin agreed to a partial 30-day ceasefire of attacks on energy infrastructure with Ukraine Tuesday, conceding little to President Donald Trump but keeping negotiations open for a broader deal to end the conflict.

Russia “will begin with an energy and infrastructure ceasefire,” and additional negotiations are being planned on the implementation of “a maritime ceasefire in the Black Sea, full ceasefire and permanent peace,” the White House said in a readout.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, speaking to reporters on a Zoom Tuesday evening as Russian attacked Kyiv and several other cities with drones and bombs, expressed cautious optimism, calling it “a step towards peace, and not towards further complication of military combat situations.”

Putin also told Trump of a planned exchange of 175 Russian prisoners for 175 Ukrainian prisoners that’s set to take place on Wednesday, the Kremlin said.

It's a decent first step. Hopefully it leads to a total ceasefire and lasting peace, though I suspect that even if it does, it'll end shortly after Trump leaves office if the outcome doesn't involve some kind of permanent joint interest, such as the mineral extraction and trade deal.

A major problem with these talks is that Ukraine has no leverage other than leaning on the US, because the EU has been overwhelmingly unhelpful if not counterproductive, and they're completely dependent on outside help just to function. I think there's also a strong chance that NATO dissolves at this rate, though it would very likely just get replaced by individual alliance treaties much like what exists in the Pacific, and that could have unpredictable effects.

Ending this war will not be as easy as President trump thought it would be but he is making progress. I think that war is like banging your head against the wall because it feels good when you stop. Maybe having a cease fire will make both sides consider how much better it will be if it was permanent.

Yeah this is worthless. First of all, Russia already signed multiple agreements forbidding strikes on energy infrastructures such as the Geneva convention which they have promptly ignored. One more agreement to be ignored won't revolutionize the world.

Furthermore, this is another example where Trump goes behind the back of Ukraine and negotiate with Russia without them so it has even less legitimacy.

@Syntosi Um... Russia is no longer bombing critical infrastructure in Ukraine. Russia is engaged with the US in peace talks for the first time in years. I would think that's kind of obvious how it's a step towards peace.

Russia has been bombing critical infrastructure for 3 years now. Has not done them any good. The main reason to bomb said critical infrastructure AKA the winter is also over which means they have little motivation to keep doing it when they are already critically low on such munitions which they could be using on the front lines.

Also Putin explicitly did not engage in peace talks, he simply made demands that can't be followed.

Yes it is. You just dont want to acknowledge the simple truth in front of you. It is very simple.

1: Putin explicitly did not agree to peace talks. To quote your own link: "but declined to endorse a full 30-day ceasefire" not to mention actual talks.

2: Putin made impossible demands which shows how unserious he actually is in his current negotiations. For example the withdrawal of Ukranian forces from the territories he has claimed in Ukraine.

3: Putin has only conceded on deescalation where it benefits him militarily such as attacks on energy infrastructure, where Ukraine has had much better effect than Russia ever could which is even highlighted in the link you sent. And a ceasefire in the black sea where Ukraine already pretty much won a naval supremacy anyways. The fact that Putin is only interested in limited pauses in areas where he is losing shows that he is just trying to get back momentum and continue the fighting.

Conclusion: Putin is not closer to peace and his current diplomatic moves is in-line with future military action rather than moving towards peace.
