Beauty or Affordability? What matters most to you when choosing a place to rent?

Affordability and practicality. I can't rent in general. Buying nothing is affordable. The housing crisis in the netherlands is very big. The waiting list for renting is literally infinite. A nornal home with neighbors attached on both sides is half a million dollars. If I adjust it to match the fact salaries are half here for a US person you have to imagine houses on average are a million dollars. So if you have to be a millionaire to buy a house you would also care most about affordability. Meanwhile when I was looking at housing prices in the US it was so cheap by comparison I could buy some of them outright.

The last place I rented was when I first got married. We were trying to save for a house so we ended up in a not so great neighborhood in an apartment that had cockroaches. A few years later I met somebody that lived there. They lived on the first floor. He worked nights as a prison guard and said one night his wife was there alone and somebody pried open a window and got in the apartment. She just hid under the covers and hoped the guy would not kill her. He just stole some stull and left but the guy said he moved out the next day.

Affordability is always the top priority. Secondarily you want the place to be clean and functional. It doesn't have to be beautiful. But pleasant, in a decent neighborhood.

Not too far from groceries, the bus line, a drug store, a park. Should fit your budget and lifestyle.

until now, the main criterion has been whether Drama Queen can reach school in 30 minutes... :D but the next place will be... where I want it to be :D

At this point in my life, affordability. Even in the future if I ever become extremely wealthy, I wouldn't need anything luxurious. And honestly boho is my kind of style. It can make any kind of place look homey.

Affordability is a must. If I can't afford it I can't afford it. Everything else is optional.

Now if I can afford it, but it's a financial burden, I'd still probably side with affordability. Beauty and amenities are only factors if the cost is not much more.

I wouldn't pick a place that wasn't affordable but for sure I have particular things I prefer. Like I don't like apartment blocks. Stand alone property where neighbours are only sideways is best. Some space with an outside space to have meals or just hang out that isn't in the public view would be my go to. The look of the place isn't so important but the surroundings are reasonably important.
