Personally I do think tarifs are a good idea. The problem is the implementation. You do that long term and give businesses who are complying a way not to be hit. If he had set a later date or exempted businesses building facilities in the US the damage would be far less.

If India builds a Tata Motors factory in America, Americans won't have to pay a tariff on those cars.

@pacificopete Yes thats widely known but that isn't a good idea if it takes 2 years to build the factory and in the meantime the company goes under due to the tariffs. So my question is when they DONT produce in the US yet but are demonstrably working towards that does the tariff apply in the meantime? If it applies until they are ready its a bad idea. If it does not apply as long as they have proof of building a US factory its a good idea.

Over the years thousands of companies have fled the US in search of slave Labor. Then when they finish building their product they ship it back to America so they can get top dollar for it.

I do not know why people are surprised. One of the things Trump ran on was bringing good jobs back to the US and he said one of the things he would do is put tariffs on foreign made goods.
