The big difference between restrictive gun control laws and restrictive voting laws is that voter restriction laws directly address the problem they're trying to solve. You need an ID to buy a gun because you want to know who is buying the gun, why wouldn't you also need ID to vote?

The people you want to stop from being able to access guns aren't going to follow the laws when trying to obtain guns. Those laws will really only affect the people who care enough about laws that you aren't generally going to see them committing crimes with the guns. A criminal wanting a gun will find another way to get one, because he doesn't want a record of obtaining the weapon. Thus, voiding the benefit of the laws in question.

Requiring ID and tracking on a person voting, on the other hand, provides a clear solution to 2 obstacles to a well conducted election. First, it ensures that only the people who are formally on record with government are voting (tax payers, citizens and such) who are legally able to vote are casting votes. And second, it helps to ensure the accuracy of state population records and allows the legislature to be more responsive to changes in the communities they serve.
