I think we are in time of big change. the fixed costs of life are high... housing, cars, energy. But there's lot of opportunity for the hard working, I think.. whether AI frees us up to make even more or displaces us, is yet to be seen. As well, we need to pull our heads out of our you know whats and think! People aren't saving like they used to, they are making dumb decisions buying things they don't need, wasting resources and money because it isn't worth their time. That is a big problem! its exactly what the rich (and the federal reserve) with the marketing dollars want you to do. Time... is money.

A lot of this is true, However a lot of people that have good jobs live beyond what they can afford. Look at all new homes being built. They all cost over a million dollars. I looked at downsizing after my kids moved out. Anyplace that was in a nice location had a covenant where you had to build over 3000 sq ft house. It is really hard to buy a piece of land and put up a 3 bedroom ranch house in a nice town and actually save some money.

In the neighborhood that I grew up in there were mostly small ranch houses. Nobody had more than one bathroom. I only knew one kid that ever went to Florida and he did not take a plane. His father drove there. According to my kids , they are the only ones in the whole school that never went to Disneyworld. I actually believe that. My wife and i always bought American made cars and drove them for 12-15 years.

I was never a big earner but I always made saving a priority. i used to argue with my wife about it all the time. It was something that i would not budge on. There were some weeks when we could not go to the supermarket but I would still put some money in the bank. As a result I had a good sized retirement account.

The problem is the million dollar homes. Staying within one's means for younger generations is not becoming homeowners at all. Starter homes are limited in quantity, built with less quality over the years, and cost astronomically high. I saw a listing where a modest condo sold for less than half of what it is worth now prior to 2021. After 2021, the price more than doubled. For those who did not purchase homes prior to the Xiden regime, you are screwed now. Some in my generation were really fucking lucky and started life earlier (career, marriage, and kids) and benefited by buying a home with locked in rates. For those late bloomer like myself, we are fucked royally.
