You young’ns probably don’t remember how efficient shopping used to be. You walk in, grab something. Walk up to a human being. They read the price. You hand them cash. They give you change. You exchange brief pleasantries and then you leave. Six minutes in and out! The automated lines in stores can’t even touch that efficiency!

Yes, I remember when I could do all the maintenance on my cars. tune ups, brake jobs and oil changes. Now , forget about it.

And they had poor fuel economy, nasty emissions, were unsafe, uncomfortable, and unreliable. That's the trade-off. Precisely engineered products are not maintainable at home.

Absurd. Modern cars commonly run 200,000 miles with minimal maintenance. American cars of the 1960's were mostly done at 100,000 miles. And they required a lot more maintenance. Moderns cars regularly run for five or more years with no unscheduled repairs.

@slatyb I cannot argue with that. My father used to buy a new car every 4 or 5 years. The mechanics were not the problem though. We live in the northeast and the roadsalt really did a job on the ungalvanized body panels.
My new truck is a Ford F-150 and it has aluminum body panels. It is 6 years old and still looks new.

@slatyb i had a 1996 Tahoe It was 14 years old and had well over 200K miles. I had to replace the air conditioner compressor. My wife made me do it because we were going on vacation and she wanted us to have AC. Otherwise I was going to just live without it because i was planning on getting a new one the next year. My 2010 Tahoe had no problems except the tires that came with it were crap and had to be replaced in less than 30K miles. They were Goodyear tires too.

Nice. Mostly I was commenting on the American cars of the 1960's and 1970's, which were absolute shit compared to modern cars.

The muscle cars of the 1960's didn't handle well compared to modern sports cars. A Porsche coupe can be comfortably driven at 150+ mph on modern roads. In a collision they were death traps. In 2012 for their 50th anniversary, the US National Traffic Safety Board did a 35mph (54kph) offset collision test between a 1962 Chevrolet Impala and a 2012 Chevrolet Malibu. The Impala driver was killed instantly. The Malibu driver would have walked away with a possible sprained ankle.

There are far less serial killers and accidents too.

by the way shopping today is about 1000x more efficient. I just go to Amazon and order the exact thing I want and it is delivered later the same day, or the next morning. One minute and done. Local retailers don't have their inventory online, so I have no idea if they will have what I need until I'm there. Who has time for that?
