Considering his January 6th stunt, and his complete lack of remorse or acknowledgement of responsibility, plus his clear affinity for authoritarians, and distaste for norms and LAWS, I think this could well be much worse than a mere distraction.

This could be a key step towards a complete authoritarian takeover.

I don't think it is fully a distraction. He has been increasingly fascist and this is probably one of the stepping stones to his actual goal.

Let us not forget that little Donald tried to order protesters shot back in 2020 but was denied by his cabinet who refused to do so. This is not a new thing for him.

I don't think it's directly a distraction but more nefarious. Basically putting military people in direct opposition to everyday people's freedom. People get angry push comes a shove and the land so proud to have the second amendment someone gets hurt.

From there it's an excuse to have Marshall law. More people get hurt more power to the military to protect the president.
