A little context here for starters- the OP is American and the context is US politics, so your leftist European definition of what a leftist is certainly is not the only possible one, no matter what you might think.

Most big cities in the US are a mess, and they are run by leftists (the mayor of Chicago certainly is one even by leftist European standards, just to give one example). So are places like California, New York, and Illinois.

However, if you’re looking for non-US examples, the UK and Canada certainly are, and that’s even before we start to consider basket cases like Cuba, Venezuela, and North Korea.
