Trump has a plan, and that plan is to fabricate some sort of emergency as an excuse to seize control in places where it is still obvious to most people that an experimental pig-man pushing fascism is far from being a desirable political system. Places where most people hate him and didn't vote for him, incidently.

First, he tested the country's reaction in Washington, D. C. Citizens there were obviously and righteously outraged. They protested, but ultimately, it went on without any major incidents. The wrinkled orange piglet rejoiced as some of those in uniform chose to obey a criminal masquerading as president, rather than the Constitution they swore to defend against all enemies, both foreign and domestic.

Well, anyway...

Can you tell us exactly how severe the crime situation is in your cities?

• Is it so apocalyptic that the National Guard is desperately needed?
• How many murders do you personally witness each day?
• Can you even visit the corner store without being stabbed and/or raped?
• Are the city's police dept. too overwhelmed and incapable of managing such a crime wave?
• Do you still have access to water and electricity?
• Can you make your way through the rubble easily enough in between artillery shellings?
• Do the constant grenade explosions and machine gun fire keep you up at night (provided that your home is not just a pile of burning rubble, of course)?

Federalism dictates that STATES handle local crime. All the murders and robberies and carjackings…. state crime, handled by the state legal system. If the federal government doesn’t think a given state is doing the job, it’s frankly too good goddamn bad, the Constitution doesn’t just allow the Feds to come in and take over law enforcement. Simply not how America works.

All the state of emergency stuff or abuses of The Insurrection Act also falls flat in the way they’re looking to do it.

Not for nothing, Chicago is ranked TWENTY-NINTH in violent crime in cities over 500,000 people. So this whole “Chicago is a killing field” is just a right wing narrative. You know where else has problems? Memphis. Kansas City. St Louis. New Orleans. Baton Rouge. Little Rock. Gary. Youngstown. Cleveland. Columbus. Houston. Oklahoma City.

I PROMISE YOU, we’ll never see the military deployed there. They won’t even be mentioned. This is a narrative designed to assault blue states and cities, which subsidize most of the red states and cities, but the right wing is desperate to paint anywhere under blue leadership as hopelessly broken, and red-led places as Utopian. I work in New York City, and live just outside the city. The subway stations are a disaster, and riding the train is a dangerous daily risk. Not that many years ago, you could just politely ignore the endless panhandling on the trains, and the person/people would just move on to the next rider and/or the next car. Now many of the panhandlers go from, "Can you spare some change?" when you ignore them to, "Give me your money!" and threatening violence. Usually the threat coming in the form of a knife. Then you've got unhinged people shoving riders onto the tracks and into oncoming trains far too often. Whenever city officials temporarily increase the number of NYPD in the subway system, it makes things better there, but then crime in other areas of the city increase. The NYPD overtime bill also tends to increase, costing taxpayers in that regard. A National Guard presence in the subway system would allow the NYPD to stay focused on the city itself, keep crime numbers down in neighborhoods, and save the city on NYPD overtime costs.

Pretty sure the city is pretty bad. North County isn't great, but mostly just really racist and dangerous at times (Ferguson is in our North County). South County seems okay, but I don't spend a lot of time hearing about it, we in West County are pretty insular. We're probably the safest, sure we had a knifing outside a movie theater (that I went to a lot) about 5 years ago, but nothing too major since then. I guess it couldn't hurt in the city, but the counties are a lot safer, probably why most people live outside the city.
