Why is a Glock semi auto pistol a "gun" and not an assault rifle? Because no pistol is a rifle. And no rifle is a pistol. How dumb can you be?

Go find me a.30-30 semi auto rifle. The.30-30 round was developed way back when for lever action rifles and that's where you find it 99% of the time. It's a slow, not very powerful 30 caliber round commonly used for deer hunting. And lever action rifles typically have a tubular fixed magazine that must be loaded one round at a time and max out at 6-8 rounds which is plenty for a hunter.

In contrast the AR 15 platform was designed as a weapon of war back in the 1950's and 60's. It typically uses the military 5.56 round which is faster and more powerful than the.30-30. It was adopted by the US Army in the mid 1960's to replace the M14 which used a larger 7.62 NATO round. It also uses a removeable magazine and capacity can vary but 20 rounds is common while 30 round magazines are available. The magazine can be changed out in seconds. And finally the AR platform was designed as a select fire weapon of war. The safety switch can be set to semi auto or full automatic fire. Civilian version just modifies the weapon to eliminate full auto fire. And people can modify them to restore full auto fire in minutes for a few dollars. The cyclic rate of fire for a full auto AR15 platform is 700-800 rounds per minute. And today, the AR15 platform has been adapted to use probably 20 different calibers of ammunition other than the 5.56 round. The AR15 is small, light, reliable, and easy to shoot with a high rate of fire and rapid reloading. That's what makes it an assault rifle dimwit.

AR is the designation for military spec rifles the design of which was originated by the company Armalite. It is not an assault rifle at all. Anyone who has used both understands that they are worlds apart.
