I’m seeing this woman and I’m a little ashamed of her past?

I’m seeing this woman who is currently a Clinical Research Manager. In the past she was enlisted in the Navy and eventually became an officer before she medically retired. He said that she doesn’t agree with war and identifies as a pacifist and she joined the military because she was homeless at the time and couldn’t afford school. She has been able to obtain her doctorate and buy a home due to her being a veteran.

What is shameful about her past? It appears she chose a temporary career that would allow her to have a home, get an education and become independent. And she's achieved that due to the benefits the military offered because of her stint in it.

It sounds like before she went into the military she was floundering and after she had a home and job she became focused on a long-term goal. She also, wisely, decided it wasn't for her, and used her benefits to secure the education she needed to move forward.

I'd think you'd be proud that she found her way and has done so well.

I don't understand why you 're ashamed.

I don't understand what there is to be ashamed of.
She enlisted in the Navy for the promised benefits. She made it through training, served with honor, decided not to reenlist after her stint, and received an honorable discharge. Not everyone becomes a lifer.

She benefited from the discipline and training, then used her benefits to get an education and become a Clinical Research Manager.

She sounds extraordinary.

I have a second cousin and her husband who joined the military to go to college. West Point will not charge tuition if your spouse is in the military. So, she was serving in the military while he went to college. Then he joined after graduation. She went and graduated, and he left after she graduated. They didn't really want to be in the military, but they did what it took. That's all the woman you're with did.

If you can't respect her and be proud of her you do not deserve her. We all have weird pasts. Nobody is perfect. She served her country. Her country is proud of her.

What in the world is shameful aboutt her past? She served even though she dislikes war, which I think is avery good thing. People that actually like war and approve of it have no business serving. War is an ugly business and the very best people participate in it very reluctantly.
