Why do police departments post arrests on Facebook?

I keep getting all these posts on Facebook popping up showing pictures of random people being arrested. Im sure I can block them, but I for sure didn't follow them or anything like that. That's pretty messed up that they do that.

If you are arrested it's public information. This basically shows the Police department is doing their job in arresting criminals based on evidence and the charges. This also puts a notice to the general public in case they have information for or against said person. Also shows those who are out committing crimes that the police are looking for crimes and it's also part of a lot of departments crime stoppers tips and information that private citizens provide information or evidence to help catch and / or the information leads to the conviction of said criminals.

It's a very good PR tool as well.

Because they haven't figured out that the court might assume innocent until proven guilty, but the public assumes guilty until proven innocent.

As far as I'm concerned, it shouldn't be made public until there is a conviction. Even then it shouldn't be published on FB.

Yes, it could be false. But even if it's not, the social "punishment" could far outweigh the severity of the crime. What next? A scarlet letter and public shunning?

In fact, many police departments do this to improve transparency and public safety awareness, but it does pose the risk of privacy infringement or social bias.
