Putin is a genius strategist but he's just one man ruling a lone as a dictator.

Whereas the US presidents have others come up with an overall strategy to get what they want.

What happened in the arab spring. Russia was re militarising and modernising. The US & NATO wanted to stop this and one of the ways they intended to do this was by building an oil/gas pipeline linking Oman to Europe going through Syria cutting Russia's oil/gas profits. Assad chose to stay loyal to long term ally Russia and the arab spring started. After the arab spring all Russian allies in the middle east barring syria and iran were in the US hedgemoney. Was around this time fracking started which reduced oil/gas profits globally, meaning Russia had less money for modernisation of their military which shows in Ukraine

In Ukraine Putin was postering but each time the us called his bluff and being a military strongman he couldn't back down and the us knew this. Even now Putin can't pull out of Ukraine because to do so means his death.

Strategically Putin has been outplayed and their military and military technology is a joke. The US is looking to continue what they started in the cold war and bring other former Russian states into the US Hedgemoney.

No, he's tactics is catastrophic... his generals are using WW2 strategy (strength in numbers), but that doesn't work against modern weapons.

His war technology is mostly outdated.

Sure, he might have some modern weapons, but just few to several prototypes (he lacks money to finance the mass production).

In general, his strategy in 21st century can't be compared to power of the ex USSR - or even former Russian empire (in their time).

The only thing he has is - the largest nuclear arsenale, and alliance with China & North Korea & Iran & India.
