I accept most stereotypes. Even the most hyperbolic of stereotypes is based on truth. Pattern recognition is a basic function of the human brain and it’s fundamental to our survival as individuals and as a species. Without it, we can’t evade predators or figure out where the best foods grow in abundance. Evolutionary biology teaches us that we almost certainly had predecessors who failed to recognize patterns, and they didn’t survive to further their bloodlines.
Modern human civilization is different. We care for people who do not have their full faculties. We help them to enjoy as long and as full of lives as they care to. That’s all well and good, but i’m not in favor of letting them breed. There is no benefit in muddying the gene pool.

Yes. Some cultural stereotypes are generally true. Italians are loud and use a lot of hand gestures. Spanish women are passionate, hot-tempered, and sexual. Germans are orderly, efficient, disciplined and not very humorous. Jews are neurotic.

But I never assume that individuals fit stereotypes. I get to know them before making assumptions.

No. I believe in getting to someone before lumping him or her into a category.

I think that many, but not all, stereotypes are based on truth.

Portly singers being able to "take us to church", for example.

Not really.

Most stereotypes fall apart the moment you actually get to know people.

I think patterns exist, sure but they’re usually shaped by culture, not by something “built in.”

So I try to judge individuals, not categories.

What about when they are generalize within a group that's more accurate, perhaps something being part of the culture

I get what you mean.

Some patterns do show up more often in certain cultures or environments, but I still see them as tendencies, not rules.

Culture shapes behavior, sure expectations, norms, how people are raised.

But even then, there are always exceptions, and individuals can break the pattern completely.

So for me, it’s “often true, but never guaranteed."

There’s some truth, yes but only in a loose way.

Stereotypes usually come from patterns, not pure fiction.

They just stop being reliable when you treat them as universal facts.

So I take them as hints, not conclusions.
