They are made by inserting genes of other species into their DNA.
The biggest threat caused by GM foods is that they can have harmful effects on the human body. It is believed that consumption of these genetically engineered foods can cause the development of diseases which are immune to antibiotics. Besides, as these foods are new inventions, not much is known about their long term effects on human beings. As the health effects are unknown, many people prefer to stay away from these foods.
Manufacturers do not mention on the label that foods are developed by genetic manipulation because they think that this would affect their business, which is not a good practice. And the dishonest FDA does not require labeling, deeming them to be “substantially equivalent” to non-GMOs.
Many religious and cultural communities are against such foods because they see it as an unnatural way of producing foods. Many people are also not comfortable with the idea of transferring animal genes into plants and vice versa.
Also, this cross-pollination can pollute and cause damage to other organisms that thrive in the environment.
Experts are also of the opinion that with the increase of such foods, developing countries would start depending more on industrial countries because it is likely that the food production would be controlled by them in the time to come.
GMO seeds negatively impact farmers through increased costs, reduced seed-saving autonomy, contamination of non-GMO crops, and the rise of resistant "superweeds". The requirement to purchase patented seeds annually, often coupled with specific herbicides, can create debt cycles and undermine traditional farming practices. Contamination can cause significant economic loss for non-GMO and organic farmers, as it can lead to lost markets and the loss of organic certification.
GMO crops harm the environment by killing beneficial bugs and plants. Harmful "super bugs and super weeds" evolve that require more deadly poisons to combat. Think about the loss of bees and butterflies, for example, and the harm that agricultural poisons cause to humans and animals.

Specifically, agricultural scientist modify crop genes so as to make better crops - ones more resistant to parasites or that yield better nutrition or more drought resistant and so forth. In other words, their goal is to make crops that are more likely to survive to market and/or be healthier and/or more likely to be bought.
While not using scientific tools like gene manipulation, humans have been doing this for thousands of years. That's what selective breeding and crossbreeding are all about.
For example, think of a "golden doodle" or a "cockapoo" or a "borderpap". These are new breeds of dogs (some not even officially recognized by AKC) which are crossbreeds of existing breeds. We believe we have a "borderpap" which is a cross between a border collie and a papillion. She was a stray we adopted. She is smart like a border collie and colored like a border collie but she also has fuzzy ears like a papillion and is hunting characteristics like a papillion.
What people worry about is the unknown. They worry that GMO foods may be "frankenfoods" and that some tweak in the genes of a crop my make it into a carcinogen or toxic food. Agricultural scientists don't change genes wholesale; they tweak a gene here or there and then sell the seeds to farmers so farmers grow better crops. That's it.
Generally, you have nothing to worry about.01 Reply- 6 mo
This is a very good and concise assessment of what happens, and I agree with it except for the final conclusion in some part. "Generally", you don't really know what you have to worry about.
GMO's in the USA for example, are monitored by the FDA, EPA, and USDA, supposedly working together to insure public safety. The EPA fired 388 employees, the FDA 3,500 employees and the USDA several hundred. Yes, I know these positions are not all directly related to the scientific oversight of GMO's, but these were not all "paper pushers" who were let go.
Add to this you have an incompetent, anti-vaxxer (the ones that are proven to work, even) at the head of the department who is ALL in favor of lax standards. There's plenty to be concerned with as these agencies operate with questionable accountability these days. If some scientist at Monsanto decides to take a giant, possibly dangerous leap in genetic engineering, who will be there to confront it, especially if you pay someone off to let it go because it will be profitable? That's a common M. O. in the current administration. P-2025/Trump view any oversight as cumbersome and a profit detractor, even if it involves something so vital as the food supply.
Currently, Republicans have lobbied for the "Dark Act" which allows clear labeling of Genetically Modified Foods ("This item contains a genetically modified organism") to be switched to a QR code label. That would mean every person has to scan every item to see if there's a GMO in their food. Clearly, that's an attempt to "Deny Americans the Right to Know" (DARK).
So you're really relying on the good sense of the scientists and the good intentions of the company doing the modifying. To me, that's a LOT to worry about!!
3K opinions shared on Society & Politics topic. Genetically Modified Organisms (GMO)
Wheat with genes of a jellyfish, Tomatoes with genes of snails.
EU made a lot of panic few years back about GMO, now after Bayer bought MonSanto it's quiet about dangers of GMO.Personally I think genetical modification happens since thousands of years as Yamnaya and people between Euphrates and Tigris, started selective breeding of steppe grasses. Oat, wheat, rye, spelt are result of that. However greed of concerns is a danger because it's in their interest natural sorts used in agriculture become infertile so farmers are forced to buy their licensed seeding material. I think this already happened as their artificial sorts mixed with natural sorts.
Those people have malicious intention and only idiots would trust without any doubts those companies and their products.00 Reply

6 moyes, most things manipulated by corporations is questionable. Id rather get something closest to what nature made, fresh, by a farmer I trust.
Even milk isn't safe... they inject the cows. our food supply is so junke dup.
But govt isn't about quality, it's about control. Feeding people is control. Ensuring they are sick, is good business!
A slow long death is a huge money maker and wealth transformer. Note, you are not allowed to kill yourself in USA... that's illegal. But one may have to suffer out in the cold misery with no food, no law against that.
And if you eat stuff that's bad and makes you sick... well..."Caveat Emptor"!!

6 moSure I have concerns with genetically altering plants that are going to be used for food. For one thing, I have no real understanding of regulatory controls and safety protocols these agriculture corporations follow or are required to follow. But we all know a good Capitalist cares first and foremost about the safety of their customers and not profits, right?

Anonymous(36-45)6 moGMO is genetically modified organism. There are 2 types of GMO, GMO as the result of selective breeding and GMO as the result of gene editing. GMO as a result of selective breeding I don't have too much of a problem as humans have been doing it for thousands of years, and without it we wouldn't have corn. GMO as a result of gene editing, I avoid as much as possible as it's not natural and problematic for both your health and farmers who can and will be sued if they plant next seasons crops from seeds harvested from current crops.

6 moMostly just the pesticides and insane fertilizers required to grow GMO crops. Using these higher yield seeds as has resulted in stripping the soil of natural nutrients and absolutely poisoning the surrounding environment.
To be fair, that is also somewhat a consequence of factory farming in general.

5 moYes they are genetically modified so that means you have no idea what side effects they will have on anything that eats it. plus most GMO plants are made to resist nasty chemicals that are used to kill all other vegetation around the crop like roundup that is known to cause cancer.
