What is a misconception you used to hold?

I used to think blind people see black and the trees created wind.
Both of these are actually misconceptions.

I used to think our votes in the USA actually meant something and the government worked for the people who vote politicians into office. But I've known the truth for at least 30 years now. Our votes are meaningless and the government has been bought by the 1% to do the bidding of the wealthy.

After the white album came out, I got this screwy idea that, when I went up to my room on the third floor, I HAD to RACE up the stairs as fast as I could to keep Paul McCartney from running after me from my parents' room with a huge knife trying to kill me. As long as I could make it to the landing about 10 steps up, I was safe!! Most often, I'd run up the stairs on all 4's, partly because they were steeper than the stairs up to the 2nd floor.

I used to think the history I was taught in US schools was the truth. I later learned they were outright lies and lies of omission most of the time, whitewashed to sound like we were the greatest government in the history of governments. Talk about a misconception!!
