That's deep, and he's right... people in crowds don't think independent. Crowds create energy and consumes the minds and hearts of others.
In the Bible story of Christ, crowds took over and turned to hate which is what lead to Jesus being killed. And this was someone that had done only good for others, except the religious leaders... and he was right.
The point being, tap into those emotional circuits which are primarily negative, and they will justify and do anything... the most awful.
One might also think of WWII Nazi Germany, how a group took over the whole nation. There was no talk of love thy neighbor.
I've been in some crowds and a protest and I can say, I'm not interestd in them in general unless it's real severe. It's too easy to go astray.
Ditto all this in investing. If part of the herd, ya get slaughtered...
People are unable to think for themselves when drowned out by the noise of the mass.
didn't read his work, wasn't aware of him.
But I will say as well regarding crowds... what is school then? There is a lot of mind control going on here... they don't teach to think, they teach what to think. NYC is an example of a mind control cog. There's a reason cities become a certain way, it's human. Most are not allowed or enabled to think outside of what the control is.
I learned about him in college. Basically crowds are easily manipulative and make bad decisions because emotions propagate faster than logic ever could. And it leads to people acting in ways that are against their own best interest or in ways that they otherwise wouldn't ordinarily behave hade they been outside the trance of group thinking.
It's a compelling observation however I think it's not really getting to the root which is people care more about survival than than morals and if the nervous system is in fight or flight mode and the individual person has no awareness of it, then they're going to rationalize what is essentially an animal knee-jerk reaction.
We are animals by default and in order to behave like humans we must discipline and study ourselves

Pretty sure he's an elitist who was anti-democracy so I have no reason to. He does have a point about dogma of crowd thought but that's about it his conclusion to that makes no sense.
Forgive me for my ignorance if I am wrong as I haven't read his work just what I gather from a bit of quick info. I've read Marx's works and letters and agree with that side of thought so you can see why I disagree with him if he's opposed socialism.
good'ol populism...
the other face of the same coin...
I haven't read LeBon. Henrik Ibsen said "The majority is always wrong", which explains how Trump won in 2024.
No, but it seems ol' Gus was onto something !!!
Sounds right.
Negative.
