European settlers took over. Many native American tribes didn’t perceive property and ownership the way Europeans did. This led to well recognized misunderstandings like “indian giver”, someone who gives you something and then takes it back. Many tribes see all property as community property. Even the land on which they lived, hunted and fished. It was there for everyone to use. So they saw no reason to protest, let alone fight for the land when European settlers came along. A few tribes were territorial and were all but wiped out for their resistance. By the time the natives recognized what was happening, it was too late. They only would have been slaughtered like the others anyway.
Presently, native Americans make up only about 3% of the US population, and that includes mixed race people who identify with their native American ancestors. Unadulterated native American bloodlines account for less than one percent. This is second only to Pacific Islanders for the smallest racial minorities group in the US.
Did they ever have a chance?
Probably not.
