It's cheaper and easier to go the moon then faking it at the time.

Independent newspaper pickup the training picture and played with them to make a better front fold. The moon landing happened and the photo fairly boring because they were astronauts not expects in photography. Give a random person on the moon with an iPhone they get similar composition.

Give it time and America will change the story to how they went there to stop the Moonarians developing nuclear weapons and the craters we see today are the evidence of missile strikes.
