So just an important addition to this: I was talking about in the US. I have no experience with the politics of conflict in other countries, so I don't have an opinion about that. About the US, I definitely have an opinion, and you can read it above.

When a substantial portion of the population is economically stressed, they can easily be persuaded by a demagogue promising simple solutions. Most of the rest will go along down that path until they are powerless to prevent a dictatorship. The elite may see what's happening and get out while they still can.
