Did liberal criminal justice policies in Chicago enable this repeat offender’s brutal attack?

It's easy to gripe about the other side, but this is one of oh so many women that have paid the price, because liberal policies (in Chicago) turns this 70x time criminal loose to finally do major damage. He doused her with gasoline and set her on fire, intentionally.

She survived, barely, life changed forever. Should have never happened.

Was insane on sane crime, violent on peaceful, black on white, or all of above, or something else.

I've been posting this story on social media a lot. Let me be clear that I'm not white, but you don't need to be white to see what's going on is ridiculous. This suicidal empathy of thinking that criminals deserve rights and illegal immigrants deserve to live in first world countries just because they passed the border is insanity.

Criminals who kill or harm innocent people should just be live-streamed being forced through a wood chipper. Actions SHOULD have consequences. I believe in eye for eye, tooth for tooth. If that policy is enforced, watch crime rates plummet, because people will actually fear the consequences.

I'm not racist, but it's clear that a portion of some ethnicities seems to be offended by everything, ashamed of nothing, entitled to everything, and contribute to nothing.

I remember this one, I was glad she survived but I can’t even imagine going through what she did. I hope she can eventually have a ‘normal’ life. As for the person that did it, it’s infuriating that someone can be released after so many offenses. Cases like hers were avoidable

Liberal? How about nonsensical. The man was arrested for knocking out a psychiatric worker days before he burned that woman, had set fire to a city hall building days earlier in the city and had a litany of criminal charges dating back years. Many included other arsons.

The man is clearly mentally deranged and how judges allowed him back on the streets to endanger others makes little sense. The records show he's pleaded guilty to a host of charges but only spent 2 years total in jail or prison.

And it seemed he WAS in psychiatric care when he attacked the psychiatric worker--- a place where he belonged.

It seems rank ignorance on the part of the judges to not weigh the totality of his aberrant behaviors. This man was no kid. He was 50 when his recent attacks occurred and had 72 criminal arrests. This has nothing to do with being a "liberal." It is all about ignorance and thoughtlessness. I hope that woman sues the city over such negligence.

You do have to wonder why judges turn such people loose looking in totality if the issue. That needs assessed and reported if our society actually cared about fixing this. I suspect it doesn't and they'll just keep doing the same thing.

Liberal policies don't believe in people taking responsibility for their actions, which =means, in their minds, they are not dangerous and there's no reason to put them in jail.

This story in Chicago is just one of many stories in cities around the country (and world) where repeat offenders commit heinous crimes. Sad.

That's not true. Liberal polices like conservative policies sometimes are just bad policies and because they're bad, horrible things happen. Liberals don't want this to happen to people. I'm not going to defend a bad policy but I just need to know what policy we're talking about?

I wish people could just stop making it left vs right immediately and automatically assume liberals or conservatives want terrible things to happen to people.. or that we don't want people to be held accountable.

Bad policies can happen on both sides and they do.

@Friendlybro79 That's fair, but if someone attempts to clamp down on policies, it be the left pushing back. Thus, it is a "liberal" policy. It doesn't take long to figure that out.
Then the question is how do you deal with such people so they don't repeat offend and so severely. So many have paid the price for these policies but I've not heard left, democrat politicians talking about how they would tighten up or revise, or even that it's a problem.

So the question to me, is on the mark.

Oh it's definitely not an easy solution for sure. I think the word policy means something. Sometimes laws are in place despite if a Democrat or Republican is in office. That said what was this guy guilty of, what were his punishments, and was he just let out for no reason? Or did he pay his debt to the crime and just get out and commit another crime? That happens in red states too but my point isn't about arguing about this because I am able to be very critical of the left, and that's where I mean politically. We have a lot of dip shits just like the right.

Do you have any specifics because I'm curious if it's a policy that failed this woman? The whole repeat offender thing really chaps my ass and as a person on the left I believe he needs to be held accountable. The punishment has to fit the crime. If he was just let out for no reason because of a democratic policy, I do not agree with that.

@Friendlybro79 no, valid point, facts matter. But some of us see a broken record... maybe because it is marketed to us and the other side doesn't get that marketing via media. It's frustrating. You noted a problem "paying their debt".. that's the problem. Releasing someone whom is bonkers without corrective action is a bad plan. That means keeping people longer... remember those mental health hospitals pre Carter? Scared straight, etc.. Nothing is perfect, but when see a pattern it needs addressed.
I'll smack the system... our mental health system is crapola. It needs to evolve beyond profit by selling meds to actual care, healing and recovery. We are a sick society. A lot of people and the system tossed out "spirit" faith religion and such, which has been essential to helping some people. That needs fixed.

It's a frustrating mess... change is always difficult. What happens is we all end up hoping it isn't us or someone we know, rather than making effort to improve it.. because the system itself is an 800lb gorilla. politicians then do whats easy, be them left leaning or right. I could give examples how that goes bad.

good discussion, we won't solve it, I'm shedding light on how a slightly right thinks.

I think our system is nuts for turning these people loose by some magical judges date. The people need helped. Like that Michael Jackson kid that was killed on the train... he needed real help to get his life in order, would have prevented his death. An inverse issue.

@AviatorTom Actually quite the contrary. There were two things in his post. Liberal polices that failed and the heinous crime. I wanted to know the liberal policy that led to this and his priors because clearly his crime is unredeemable.

He should be dealt with accordingly and not be allowed out of prison ever at the very least. He made a statement and I want to understand more. I'm not arguing at all about the heinous crime.

I asked a few times for links to the article so we could read the same thing. No one shared it so I read 3 different articles from different sources. To act in good faith I do want to share in after reading all the details this is a complete breakdown of the criminal justice system. I wanted to do my due diligence and read up because you both know things get distorted online.

It's the cash bail policy that causes the breakdown... that's what I was looking for. I don't know local Chicago policies. I can understand having bail for non violent criminals but not violent or felony crimes. This is a terrible policy and it's good to note that people with leftist ideologies (mainly for me) don't agree with all the polices that come out of democratic led cities or towns. Sometimes policies aren't meant to allow this sort of thing to happen, but hey it did, it's wrong, and it needs to be fixed immediately.

I thought I would share this in case you were thinking I was being a dick by questioning his priors.

Frankly, It be better if there was some kind of "thread" for such cases, so we could evaluate in detail this issue, and produce understanding and changes so doesn't happen again in this case or others. That's what Toyota does and why their cars used to be better. Find root causes.
What we do, is the definition of crazy. "oh he didn't kill anyone, just burn a building down, so we turn him loose". Is it possible they are out of space in prisons and psych places, so they just medicate and release and hope it isn't them?

FWIW... I see these people on the streets all the time. It's scary, unnecessary. They need help, if it's even possible.
The system should work like this:
Are they safe to release: Yes or No. If no, put them in secured space until safe to release.

That ain't gonna fly but that's what is safe for us.

Unfortunately, there's quite a few cases like this, and other cases of women or people being set on fire. Most don't survive. They do the same with teens that steal cars and people that wreckless drive and we've had several deaths in the area recently from that including 1yr old and relatives burned alive in the car.

Just things to think about when voting for policies as politicians soon make flowerly speeches.

it's extremes right? There's a sane middle ground, I don't want Iranian Mullahs running things. I also don't want bratty poorly raised kids stealing cars, crashing them... sometimes killing people and others... rinse and repeat.
We've lost discipline. We can re-train, heal, re-educate and most importantly... avoid damaging people in the first place, if we wanted to. We just don't want that enough.
