Probably should be surprised, right? Trump stands to only stands to lose by looking closer at the accuser's story.

Platner is a Democrat who was making a play to switch Maine. Knocking Platner out of the running benefits Trump. Instead , he's choosing to do something that jeopardizes his own interests for the sake making sure someone else doesn't get unfairly accused.

Trump has surprised me a lot over the years. He's a much more principled person than a lot of people give him credit for.

Keeping quiet would have been the more politically savvy thing to do. And honestly, I don't think anyone would have faulted him for it at all. I think that not standing up for Platner would have violated Trump's personal ethical code though. Trump clearly operates by kind of personal code that goes beyond his personal feelings or self interest.
