To be blunt, what does it mean for someone to be a nerd in a negative sense and why is that frowned upon in society?

The idea is that someone overly focused on intellectual pursuits will be underdeveloped socially, making them awkward or even creepy.
This has been a longstanding trope in the media, and therefore a tough negative stereotype to break. In addition to being awkward, at best, intelligence is often vilified. The villain is often an “evil genius”, and the hero is always good looking, athletic and charming. Even if the evil genius bests our hero, all of his friends come to his aid and the villain can’t match that because he obviously has no friends.
“Revenge of the Nerds” was a brilliant standout that flipped the trope on its head much to the delight of the majority of nerds who knew the truth. The villain is often the brawn over brains bully who picks on weaker people for fun. Literally textbook sociopathic behavior, but we don’t want to temper that aggression when they’re so good on the football team!
More recently nerds have been getting some props. They’re often rich and powerful now with the Big Tech boom. Everyone knows the ladies like rich and powerful men. Now the football team is often working for the nerds in some fashion or another and that power shift is kinda life imitating art. A nerd with power and money who hasn’t shed the shame of his former life might hold a grudge and be a jerk just because he can.
Remember that everyone is the hero of someone’s story and the villain of someone else’s story.

Nerd means people, especially in school that talk about boring facts instead of talking about sports games (and at most sports statistics.) Usually nerds are awkward in social groups and situations. People find us boring and easy- "safe" no risk- targets to attack with mocking and pushing.
