Let's apply some logic here.

300k for a half decent detached house in a suburban area in the north of England.

I would say basic living costs without any luxuries and rent/mortgage would be say £1000 per month. 12k per year. 12k per year by 60 years is 720k. So you're going to fall short in around 40 years.

But you need to factor in interest and inflation. Inflation is going to shrink its buying power heftily.

I'm not sure how realistic the interest figure rates are but according to google:

Savings: Earning 4.5% gross on £750,000 generates roughly £33,750 annually before any applicable income tax.

So theoretically you could live well on the interest alone. Presuming a modest lifestyle. Which would be worth it if you didn't have to deal with morons.

But most people will fritter it away and invest it poorly so they'll probably come to a dead-stop in about 15 years, finding most of it gone.

Of course, the ideal would be to have an income in a job that you're actually doing the good of humanity and yourself. Self employed. You will need to do something with your time.

Define "easily and peacefully". Because when i was your age my plan was to amass a million dollars and retire. Now, almost to a million dollars (about 4 to 6 years off). I think i need closer to 1.2 million. And will probably need 1.5 when i finally do retire (in about 10 years.🤷‍♂️).

Point is, life get more complicated as you get older. You can live a simpler life to make it LESS complicated. But there are some things you just cannot get around. Healthcare (especially as you age) is a big one. And it's designed to keep you on the treadmill of life.

But to answer you question, a million dollars is a hell of a nest egg, especially at 26. A million can give you a lot of passive income to work with. It's like having a second income that you don't have to labor for.👍

Inflation will devour lot of real value of this money in one or two decades.

Buy real estate and rent it out, It's probably better solution. However for 1M USD capital it's unlikely you will have enough landlord income for comfy life.

What is it doing in the bank? Money halves every decade. So when you are 80 that 1 million would be about $31,250 in today's dollars even if you never spent any of it.

You need to invest and be frugal if you want to live from it. Certainly get financial planning.

Not id you live in a democrat run state. In the state where I live it takes $127,000 for a single person to live comfortably. It would be hard to find a guaranteed return of 13% on a million dollars.
