I teach at a state college in the northeast. The students cannot do basic math and read at a 5th grade level. I am always amazed at what they do not know. It was bad ten years ago but got much worse after we had covid,

Nope. Most of what you need to know in life you learn in grade school. And probably most of that is learned up till the 4th grade. The rest of the time spent in school is just socialization and cheap childcare. Because in high school they're not old enough to act like and be an adult yet.
