What car signals elite status?

I used to be a car nut. What I learned was that luxury branding is no indicator of quality. Excluding Porsche which actually deserves a price premium, German cars should be avoided like the plague. Land Rover is a joke. Only idiots buy those things. Rolls, Bentley, and Aston Martin are likewise for morons with more money than brains. Italian exotics are still Italian cars, finicky divas that perform great, a few days per year. Break constantly. And cost a fortune to maintain.

The only brands that have real elite status for me are Porsche and Lexus. But Porsche isn't luxury for the most part (Panamera excluded) and Lexus isn't a driver's car. Mercedes, Audi, and BMW are trash and a badge of stupidity for me.

I'll give Mercedes a break on their AMG's coming out of Affalterbach. I've owned 2 of them and beat the snot out of both. They never broke and they were actually pretty easy to maintain.

And as far as performance cars go, the base C8 corvette and the Z06 are relative bargains and fairly easy to live with. Just figure on $10K per year in tires.

Best performance car I ever owned was a 2008 Honda S2000 AP2V3 bought new. That thing was bulletproof and gave me more smiles per mile than any other sports car I've owned. Not the fastest. But the best driver's car. It just communicated everything.

I live near a very wealthy town, and I see a lot of Range Rovers, Mercedes G-Wagons, Maseratis, etc. Honestly, though, the “old money” people, I very often see them in these little convertibles that look like they’re from Europe and from like the 1960s. Think of something Austin Powers would drive, lmao. And usually I can’t even readily identify the make of the car, you can just tell there’s a lot of teak wood in the interior, haha, like it’s a sailboat. And the same guy ABSOLUTELY owns a sailboat. Probably some fancy shit only the top 1% even know about, lmao.
