What do you think about Northern Cyprus and resolving the Cyprus issue?

Personally, I think the Cyprus issue is one of those situations where both sides have legitimate fears and grievances, which is why simply telling one side to give in probably isn't going to work.

The biggest problem is that the two sides don't even fully agree on what the end goal should be. The Greek Cypriot side and the UN framework have generally supported a bizonal, bicommunal federation with political equality, while the Turkish Cypriot leadership has increasingly pushed for recognition of two separate states with equal international status.

I don't think the answer is pretending the division doesn't exist. There are two communities that have lived separately for decades, and any realistic solution has to deal with security, property, political power, territory, displaced people and the role of Türkiye and Greece.

What gives me a little hope is that the UN has been trying to rebuild trust and restart meaningful dialogue. In July 2026, António Guterres met with both leaders and said the immediate priority was rebuilding trust and creating space for renewed negotiations.

Personally, I'd rather see a practical compromise that both communities can actually live with than another agreement that looks perfect on paper but collapses because one side feels threatened or excluded. After so many decades, getting people to coexist peacefully and feel politically secure has to be more important than either side getting everything it wants.

The solution is obvious, a two-state solution. Northern and Southern Cyprus recognize each other as independent countries. Problem solved.

Or a federation where Turks and Greeks have their own separate regions.

but greeks don't recognize it unfortunately. Actually all of the countries don't recognize northern cyprus except for turkey itself

It has to be resolved somehow. It can't stay like this forever, but Turks aren't gonna give up Northern Cyprus.

On the global scale this is a third-row problem. But yeah, it would be nice, if the issue could be resolved. Maybe after Erdogan is gone there will be new people motivated to solve it.
