Poll numbers for Trump are historically bad. Republicans are mostly doomed. People are going to vote them out in crazy numbers. And Trump is the most hated man in America. His blessing is needed to win a primary. It is the opposite for a general election. That's the cost of letting him take over their once decent party.

It's possible that being considered a Trump supported candidate is more of a liability and less of a boon in this election. A Trump supported candidate actually lost the GOP primary in Michigan. He lost it to someone who had already dropped out of the election by double digits.
