Mountain Dew is a popular American drink that's never really took off in the UK. It is available in some supermarkets but hasn't got a prominent position on the shelves and you usually find it in a tiny section dedicated to American stuff.
But in order to appease the sophisticated British palate, Mountain Dew is releasing "pitch black' flavour exclusively in the UK.
Now I know in the states that Mountain Dew is mostly drunk by the black community, so is this marketing a little racist?
I don’t know if black people are Mountain Dew drinkers per se. When i think of Mountain Dew, i think of gamers. Pepsi targeted them pretty hard for years and controlled the market on people staying up way past their bedtimes. But then “energy drinks” came along. I don’t even know if Mountain Dew still has any market share among gamers anymore. I didn’t know anything about MD black until i saw your post. So i’m just spitballing here… I think Pepsi targeted Europe because when we think of the “Dark Ages”, we think of Europe. Therefore, the darkest Mountain Dew should be European! Stuff that in your pipe and smoke it! Ell oh ell!
Perhaps it would be racist to not like or dismiss Pitch Black Mountain Dew. Deserves the same shot as everybody else I guess. I will say that demographically I think you'll find the drink has a stronger pull in appalachia as that's where it's roots are (TN). Seemed like everyone was drinking it when I lived up on the blue ridge, heavily Scots-Irish heritage there just for reference. The Texas soda Dr. Pepper remains most popular in Texas even to this day I believe, and mostly due to it's origin in Waco... people here have been drinking that for generations. Mountain Dew, I remember being marketed as a hillbilly drink years ago... probably would piss a few people off nowadays.
Pitch black is grape with a citrus tang. I have never heard that "mostly black people" in the U. S. drink Mountain Dew. There appears to be highest consumption of sugar sweetened drinks among adolescents, and non hispanic black people in the U. S. I can't find any racial stats on named drinks.
Mountain Dew has several flavors. The dark color makes it stand out compared to other varieties/sodas. It looks "cool." Are black cars racist? Black goth clothes? Black shoes?
The drink description says it has a complex flavor that should appeal to adults. Not overly sweet, tang and bite. Sounds like they're going for a more sophisticated group of consumers. Two versions of Mountain Dew are in the top 10 consumed sodas in the US. Can't only be one racial group consuming it...
" Now I know in the states that Mountain Dew is mostly drunk by the black community" ... umm, no. That's not a fact, and I don't know where you got that information.
Mountain Dew is drunk primarily by teen-agers and young adults under 25, of all races. Actually, the opposite is true. Kentucky is the largest consumer state of the Dew, and they are 81% white. Next biggest consumers are West Virginian (89% white), South Dakota (82% white), Indiana (79% white). The only state with a large consumption of Dew and a greater concentration of black folks is Georgia, which is 30% black.
So your demographic premise is incorrect, and naming it "pitch black" has nothing to do with race or being racist.
@Kingofkings1992 As you well know, people will often make up "facts" or make statements just to fit the narrative they already believe. It only took a few seconds to get the data that proved it wrong, but it never ceases to amaze me how people just don't fact check before they post.
Why racist? Racist is when you show prejudice against people based on their race. This is marketing a product to a group of people. If it happens that black people like this product there is nothing racist about making this product to sell it to them. Racist would be if I had a soft drink factory and I do not think always and only about money. And so I make all the products that white people like, and no products that black people like on purpose so hopefully they go and settle somewhere else where they can find the products that they like.
Mountain Dew was originally a nickname for moonshine. I believe it came from Scotland. In gamer culture it is popular and it is still popular in the mountains. Not many blacks in the mountains here but today everything is racist, so yes.
Mountain Dew song is from 1928. Unsure as to when this comedian sang it here.
I've never heard of Mountain Dew being a black person drink of preference.
Also, I suspect most of the black people food and drink stereotypes are B. S. because it always just seems to be good food and stuff to drink that's not expensive. Kook-Aid, Watermelon/friend chicken/Chinese food... nobody on the planet dislikes any of that stuff unless they're allergic.
So I'm going to say it's not racist, maybe unless there's something about U. K. black people loving Mountain Dew.
It's just a name white chili did you make the white chili it's called white chili because of the white beans the chicken the sour cream because everything in it is white not like brown chili where the beans are brown the hamburgers Brown it's just the name
Mountain Dew was invented when farmers took their cows up into the mountains but forget about some cows, go down too low in the stream and drink the water.
My Japanese neighbor told me she loves Mountain Dew, even though I told her it was the soda most hated by dentists, because it causes the most cavities due to mount of sugar it has. Where I live it's popular by Whites, not just the Black community. I don't drink soda, but if it's offered I'll take a coke.
Racist? No, I don't think so. It's just the name they created to make it sound mysterious and get folks to buy it.
The reason why mtd isn't in UK isn't cause it didn't take off, it's cause every flavour is pretty much banned due to our regulations. Which I suppose they aren't bothered to try get around besides when they randomly do... Like with code red back in the day and now pitch black?
Also if ya think pitch black is racist... Major melon would like a word...
True Mountain Dew is green, and I can understand why UK people don't want to drink something that's green.
I don't think black Mountain Dew is racist, just some overpaid marketing guy's idea of trying to compete with Coke and Pepsi in teh UK.

i have no idea the other day i found a small green mountain bottle in the woods , its from the 1960's when mt dew first came out so its been around for a while , used to only be the original flavour which seems really dull now is there is like a dozen flavours in cans at most stores
It comes in a green bottle Mountain Dew. I’ve never heard of black pitch bedore. I don’t even know what it would taste like. But I do like Mountain Dew a lot. Of course it’s not racist. You wear black clothes, sometimes right? is that racist I don’t think so
No, I don't think so. I haven't noticed that mountain dew is disproportionately drunk, (drank?), by African Americans that I'm aware of. Even if it was, that's really reaching for something to be offended about.
Moutain Dew addict here lol (im not black but mixed white/hispanic). Never heard of pitch black mtn dew but then again im in america. I dont see it as racist, just another marketing tactic. Companies try hard.
Its nit racist its marketing. They are trying to attract a certain demographic and as an African American its not working. Get a whole new marketing plan

Nah that's been out for over a decade. Besides, it can't be racist because it isn't watermelon flavored and black.

I was confused by this comment as well. The most widely liked soda in the black community is by a mile Sprite. Lol 😂

no more than UK people wearing black clothes.
don't drink it, it's garbage.

I think people drink Mountain Dew as an alternative to Coke or Pepsi and making it black sort of defeats athe purpose.
That looks nasty lol what flavor is pitch black?
No because you have to allow for peculiar British tastes in beer.
Mountain Dew is mostly drunk by white people. Specifically rednecks and pale basement dwellers. In the US Black people drink Sprite or Fanta
I've not tried it but will as a white skinned, blonde haired blue eyed Scandinavian.
Most African americans drink dirty sprite or fanta/faygo for the barre.
That word is thrown around so much, it is meaningless
I think even paying attention to the notion that the color of it was racist suggests that you are probably a racist.
Its nit racist its marketing. They are trying to attract a certain demographic and as an African American its not working. Get a whole new marketing plan
Nah that's been out for over a decade. Besides, it can't be racist because it isn't watermelon flavored and black.
Nope it isn't, is this a joke clown poppy poppins 😂
Sigh... mentioning the color as a flavor of a soft drink is not a bash against an entire race.
I never heard that Mountain Dew was consumed by black people disproportionately.
Just because it refers to the colour black doesn't make it racist...
Nope. Mountain Dew is not predominantly a black community drink. @purplepoppy you're confusing Mountain Dew with Sprite young lady.
I don't know I don't drink soda in general though.
man i wish i was black. this sounds so good!
Admitting black is a color is racist
No it isn't
